Check Federal Custody Releases

To find someone released from federal or immigration custody after a Forsyth County case, first identify which agency took the person. A county jail departure may be a transfer to the Bureau of Prisons, U.S. Marshals Service, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or a contract facility. It does not by itself prove release to the community. Federal and immigration release checks use different locators, different identity fields, and different records. The county entry, receiving-agency result, and court docket should be reconciled before drawing a conclusion.

Forsyth Federal Release Routes

No separate BOP prison, ICE detention center, or U.S. Marshals facility was identified inside Forsyth County for this project. The custody path still matters. A person can leave Forsyth County Jail because of a federal pickup, federal court order, BOP designation, ICE detainer transfer, or placement in a contract jail. The sheriff's record shows the end of local custody. The federal agency and court record show what followed.

The correct source depends on the stage. BOP generally covers people serving federal prison sentences and preserves locator records from 1982 to the present. USMS manages federal pretrial prisoners from a custody order through acquittal, release, conviction, or delivery to BOP. ICE handles civil immigration detention. One person may pass through more than one of these systems, so a search that ends at the first “released” label can miss a later transfer.

County release does not prove community release. Confirm whether an outside agency accepted custody after the Forsyth jail stay.

Check a Federal Prison Release

Use the BOP Inmate Locator for a sentenced federal prisoner. Search by the BOP register number when known. A name search can also use age, race, and sex to narrow the results. Compare the result carefully because the locator is national and can return people unrelated to Forsyth County.

  1. Search by register number, or enter the person's full name and available identity fields.
  2. Open or read the matching result and note the facility, register number, and release date.
  3. If a facility is listed, treat the record as a current or designated federal custody result.
  4. If the release date has passed and no facility is shown, read BOP's record note for the past-release meaning.
  5. Check the federal docket for the judgment, supervised-release term, or later custody order.

BOP explains that a past release date with no facility location means the person is no longer in BOP custody. That does not establish that every form of custody or supervision ended. The person could be under federal supervised release, in another justice system, or affected by a later case. The locator is release evidence for BOP only.

BOP Release Record Meanings

BOP locator results are compact. They are useful when read within their limits. A register number identifies the federal record, while a facility shows the current prison location when one is provided. The release field may be actual, projected, or otherwise framed by the record's status.

BOP resultReasonable reading
Facility and future release dateThe person is associated with a BOP institution and has a listed release date.
Past date, no facilityBOP says its custody ended on the listed date.
No matching personThe name or number may be wrong, the person may be outside BOP coverage, or another agency may hold the record.
Register numberThe strongest identifier for matching later federal records.

The locator covers federal inmates from 1982 forward. An older case may require archival records. A federal pretrial detainee can also be absent because USMS, not BOP, is responsible at that stage. Do not use a BOP no-result to rule out a federal arrest or court case.

Check Immigration Custody Release

The ICE Online Detainee Locator System is the official search for people currently in ICE custody and people in CBP custody for more than 48 hours. ICE materials also describe limited visibility for some recently released people. Search by A-number and country of birth when both are known. The other route uses biographical details such as name, country of birth, and date of birth.

  1. Select the A-number route when that identifier is available, omitting any leading zero if the form directs.
  2. Enter the country of birth and complete the required verification.
  3. For a biographical search, use the exact name form and date of birth found on case records.
  4. Compare the response with the Forsyth County transfer entry and immigration case information.
  5. If the locator does not resolve the question, use the ICE contact path shown by the system or legal case records.

An ICE transfer is not the same as a criminal sentence transfer to GDC or BOP. Immigration detention is a separate civil custody system. A Forsyth County Jail entry that ends because ICE accepted custody confirms only that local jail custody ended. It does not prove removal, release on conditions, continued detention, or any other final immigration result.

Track U.S. Marshals Custody

The U.S. Marshals Service holds federal pretrial prisoners under court authority and may place them in federal, state, local, or private facilities. USMS does not offer a public, all-purpose inmate locator comparable to BOP. That makes the federal court docket and known detention facility especially important before sentence and BOP designation.

Start with the federal case number, defendant name, and the court's detention or release orders. If Forsyth County Jail held the person under an outside hold, request the local custody entry and destination from the sheriff. If conviction and imprisonment followed, move to BOP. If the court ordered release before a prison designation, the docket should show the controlling order. Counsel of record or the relevant federal case office may be able to identify the authorized contact route for case-specific questions.

Detainer
A request or legal basis for another agency to take or continue custody.
Designation
BOP's assignment of a sentenced person to a federal institution.
Pretrial custody
Detention while the federal case is pending and before a prison sentence.
Supervised release
A federal court-ordered term in the community after prison custody.

Request the Forsyth Transfer Record

The local record is the bridge between Forsyth County Jail and an outside custodian. If P2C no longer displays the person, send a focused request through the Forsyth Sheriff's JustFOIA portal. Ask for the booking and release or transfer entry for a named person and an approximate date range. Include a known case, incident, or docket number.

Ask for the release type or reason if releasable and the receiving agency or destination if the person was transferred. The sheriff may redact or withhold information under a legal exemption, but a narrow request makes the intended custody event clear. Georgia's Open Records Act generally requires records within three business days or an explanation and production timetable when the agency cannot meet that period.

The county record should then be compared with the receiving system. BOP, ICE, USMS, GDC, and another county each maintain their own part of the chain. The Forsyth County release search explains the local booking record and court path in more depth.

Federal Release Source Screens

The official BOP inmate locator is the direct national source for sentenced federal inmate location and listed release dates.

Federal Bureau of Prisons inmate locator search

The locator's national scope is why identity fields and the federal register number should be matched before accepting a result.

BOP's record notes explain what a past release date and missing facility mean.

That official explanation supports a finding about BOP custody only, leaving court supervision and other systems for separate confirmation.

Reconcile Federal Release Records

A sound result follows the custody chain in order. First identify the Forsyth County booking and how it ended. Next identify the receiving federal or immigration authority. Then check the locator suited to that authority and the court record that authorized detention, transfer, sentence, or release. Dates should line up, but each record may use a different event date.

Common mismatches have clear causes. A person can vanish from Forsyth P2C after transfer but remain in custody. A federal defendant can be in a USMS contract jail and not appear as a BOP prisoner. ICE may require an A-number and country of birth that the county record does not display. A BOP result can show past release while federal supervised release continues. These are system boundaries, not automatic errors.

VINELink is not a substitute for BOP or ICE. GDC is not the source for a federal sentence. The county jail does not compute a federal prison release date. Keeping each agency in its proper role makes the final answer more reliable and helps distinguish release from one facility from the end of all custody.

Federal Records and Follow-Up

When a locator result is not enough, use the federal court docket for detention orders, judgments, commitment documents, and supervised-release terms. A judgment can show the prison term and post-custody supervision. A later order may modify those terms. Court data does not replace the custodian's live status, but it explains the legal basis for the custody path.

For a sentenced federal prisoner, keep the BOP register number with any records inquiry. For immigration custody, keep the A-number secure and use it only through official case or locator channels. For a USMS path, keep the federal case number and the name of the court. Those identifiers are far more precise than a name alone, particularly when a Forsyth County transfer occurred months before the final release.
